to House Bill 27 by CONNICK and

House Bill 223 by MORENO!

When: Wednesday, April 26, 8:45 am
Where: Louisiana State Capitol -- House Criminal Justice Committee Room 6
Colors: Wear Purple!

These bills protect victims of domestic violence!

HB 223 by Rep. Moreno: Provides protection for dating partners. Currently only household members or spouses are covered in criminal Domestic Abuse Battery laws. That means people in long term relationships who don’t live together are excluded. Help us to close this loop hole. The Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 60% of domestic abuse victims are dating partners.

HB 27 by Rep. Connick: Provides protection for same sex couples. Domestic Abuse Battery criminal laws only protect couples of the opposite sex. Research shows that domestic violence is just a prevalent in same sex couples as it is in opposite sex.

Senate Democrats Fought for the Filibuster, and Fought for Us

http://now.org/media-center/press-release/senate-democrats-fought-for-the-filibuster-and-fought-for-us/

"Senate Democrats Fought for the Filibuster, and Fought for Us"
Statement by NOW President Terry O’Neill

April 6, 2017

Washington, DC - After Senator Mitch McConnell’s reckless, disturbing decision to use the “nuclear” option, and force through the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch, NOW is grateful to the progressive Senators who stood their ground for women.

Gorsuch was nominated by a potentially illegitimate president, under investigation for possible collusion with the Russian government to manipulate the results of the 2016 election.
Gorsuch is seeking a seat stolen from Merrick Garland, an immensely qualified judge with moderate judicial philosophy.
Gorsuch has plagiarized legal texts, seriously undermining his credibility.
McConnell wasn’t able to get those 60 votes, because Gorsuch is not entitled to them.

We are deeply grateful to our 45 allies in Congress who did everything in their power to filibuster this disastrous nomination. These women and men understand that giving Gorsuch a seat on the bench will directly imperil women’s lives. We are thankful for their leadership, and deeply troubled by the actions of the senators who failed to join them. Women voters will remember this moment in November 2018.

Just one more vote stands between Neil Gorsuch and a lifetime appointment to our nation’s highest court. We urge all senators to refuse to confirm Neil Gorsuch this Friday evening. Women are watching, and we will not forget.
